Checklist of Maintenance Tips to Extend Your Vehicle’s Lifespan

You spent a lot of money on your vehicle, so it only makes sense to do everything you can to extend the vehicle’s lifespan. The 5 DIY maintenance tips to extend your vehicle’s lifespan that I recommend are:

1.  Change the air filter (12 months/12,000 miles)
2.  Change the oil and oil filter.
3.  Check all of your fluids often and top off.
4.  Clean the battery terminals.
5.  Change the spark plugs.

Print out this checklist to better be able to maintain your vehicle. I recommend that you pick a manual for your vehicle that provides you with vehicle-specific instructions on repairing and maintaining your vehicle.

But we’ll provide some information for these basic maintenance tasks below.

1. How to Change an Air Filter

Changing an air filter is so easy that you often don’t need tools, and when you do, a ratchet is often the only thing you’ll need. The air filter should be changed every 12 months or 12,000 miles – whichever comes first.

You’ll need to:

1.  Open the hood of the car.
2.  Locate the black box with clips on the side.
3.  Open the casing.
4.  Note the placement of the filter.
5.  Remove the filter.
6.  Place the new filter inside.
7.  Close the case and position the metal clips again.

That’s it. Online forums or a good manual will help you locate the air filter.

2. How to Change Your Oil
If you have 45 minutes, you can change your car’s oil. You’ll need to have the following tools available:

*   Oil filter wrench
*   Ratchet
*   Funnel
*   Oil pan

Follow the mileage benchmark set in your manual for when to change your oil. Now, make sure the vehicle is cool. You’ll also need a car jack and need to know how to jack up your vehicle.

Now, follow these steps:

1.  Locate the oil pan and place the oil pan below.
2.  Remove the drain plug and allow to drain fully.
3.  Replace the plug.
4.  Remove the oil filter with your wrench.
5.  Lubricate your new oil filter with new oil.
6.  Fill the filter partly with new oil.
7.  Screw on the new filter with your hand.
8.  Lower the vehicle and open the hood.
9.  Use your funnel to fill the engine with new oil.
10. Check the oil level with your dipstick making sure the levels are sufficient.
1.  Discard your old oil responsibly.

3. How to Check Your Vehicle’s Fluids


You’ll be surprised at how many check engine lights come on per year because fluid levels remained low for too long. This is Autel Scanner, and you’ll need to have any required fluids available. Simply open the hood, and locate the dip-stick or level for:

1.  Oil
2.  Coolant
3.  Power steering fluid
4.  Windshield washer fluid
5.  Brake fluid

Check and replace fluids as needed. If the fluids are dirty, you may need to drain them and replace them.

4. How to Clean the Battery Cables


If your battery cables get dirty, you’ll have problems starting your vehicle. A good rule of thumb is to clean these cables every time you check your fluids – once every month or every other month will suffice.

You’ll need a few items:

*   Wire brush
*   Wrench or socket

A quick visual check will signal you to any erosion which may exist. Once you’ve checked for erosion, you’ll want to:

1.  Remove the battery cables by locating the nut and loosening them.
2.  Remove the ground first which is often the negative cable. There’s a guide to help you here.
3.  Clean off any corrosion with the wire brush.
4.  Put the posts back on and tighten as needed.

You can also use corrosion removing fluid, but I find the wire brush to work better.

5. How to Change Spark Plugs


Spark plugs are a bit complicated to replace, so make sure you’re comfortable before following these steps. You’ll also need a ratchet, socket wrench, spark plug socket and a 12″ socket extension to get started with MB STAR Diagnostic Tool.

Now, open your hood and locate your spark plugs.

1.  Remove the first wire.
1.  Use your socket and extension to remove the first spark plug.
1.  Apply anti-seize compound to the threads of the spark plug ignoring the lower threads.
1.  Install the new spark plug by hand and then tighten slightly. Use a torque wrench if possible.
1.  Re-attach the wire.
1.  Repeat for all spark plugs.

You need to ensure that you do this one wire at a time so that the wire order doesn’t get mixed up. Buy pre-gapped spark plugs and a torque wrench to follow the right specs for your vehicle.

I just got my ICarScan VCI and got icarscan going on iOS, almost. It requires an explicit trust of an enterprise app it downloads but it starts after that, finds the dongle and when I try to scan, I get this:

Checking What is the IOS software you are using?
Mine seems to work fine without forcing me to select all cars.

But the Porsche version on my second app is v21.70 and it is working just fine. Not sure what is the difference between v21.70 and v22.20

I’m running iOS 11.3.1. It’s a private phone, no enterprise software installed, not rooted or anything. It’s possible they broke something with 22.20. I’ll get in touch with them, just as soon as their web site comes back up. Unbelievably, it’s still down.

I had to select all 10 (it’s 10 now) features right away BTW, wouldn’t let me proceed with just Porsche.


How to use GM Tech2 scan tool for Chevrolet C5 diagnostic


GM Tech2 is a diagnostic tool for the most part. It can be used to program out/in certain RPO’s in the BCM and can be used to bleed the ABS brake system without introducing air into the system. The extent to which it can be used to tune a Chevrolet C5 is that if you have a PCM Image that will work for your car you can save the current PCM Image and flash the new one you have onto the PCM. It cannot go in and individually change the tuning tables in the PCM as can say either EFI Live or HP Tuners tuning tools. But then those tools cannot touch the BCM either.
If you do or plan to do a lot of diagnostic work on your car it can be a worthwhile tool. Most of the diagnostic charts in the factory service manual assume the availability of a Tech 2. But you have to learn to use the tool like any other computerized diagnostic tool. It has layers and layers of menus to wade through. But in certain diagnostic situations it can be an invaluable tool because it allows you to turn on and off hundreds of computerized settings to aid in the diagnosis process.
GM intentionally dumbed down the capabilities of the Tech 2 to change things to avoid law suits due to an errant technician that changed engine or emissions settings that could result in engine damage or emissions violations.

GM Tech2, the bi-directional scan tool can access all the 10 computers in the C5 corvette. That means it can scan for DTC codes, allow the adding or removing of most accessory codes like turning off the mag ride shocks to install regular schocks, fixing window regulator problems, etc. For Bi-directional it can active the ABS system to flush the brake fluid, reset the Long Term Fuel Trims, eliminate the 1-4 shift on manual trans, etc. It cannot make changes (like a tune tool) to the transmission or engine management system. For the avid DIY’er it is a great tool.
In the C5, the “computers” (technically they are modules) and they communicate over the OBDII compatible DLC data bus to each other. The range from you radio to your ride control, to your HVAC system. Even the Bose head unit talks to the PCM and BCM through this bus, but the CD changer talks over a “private” data bus to the head unit.

– Used my GM tech II to retrofit tcs and marry a non divorced cd changer.

– reads everything a genuine one does. Heck, it’s probably made in the same factory as a genuine one with a different sticker on it. Pinpoint bad air bag sensors, turned on the tpms on both our Z’s.

– It works exactly like any others I’ve used at gm dealers over the years

– $339 for a brand new tech2 with a CANDI module all the cables and adapters and case is great

-connected to my intimidator ss and everything was there

– Change one of my c5s that is canadien to US to disable the auto headlights because they don’t always open when they should and when they do work right they come on too early.

– You have to specify GM English when you order the unit. There are a lot of other cards for different languages Saab, Holden, etc

– Is now fully functional for F body, C5 and C6, It cost me a lot more than the initial $1000 that I thought was a good deal.

– Plugin to my ’08 93 Aero and play around with the typical body and key features. My primary reason for picking up the Tech II was to program a spare key. I figured ~$500+ at a dealer or ~$400 on my own would be well worth it…obviously if I received a working, defect free, unit.

– Able to get security access using an old Dell laptop from my IT guy’s graveyard.

If you can’t do that, just buy additional TIS2000 with USB key.

– Hooked it up to test engine, ABS, transmission etc, stored DTCs, Freeze Frame, live data all the test result were displayed on the large, easy –to-read backlit screen. It helped to carry out accurate and stable diagnostic function.

– Compared with GM MDI, Tech2 scan tool covers more vehicles including OPEL, GM, SAAB, and Isuzu.

-If you have a 1997-2000, the TPMS is in the firmware and cannot be programmed. With the addition of the Z06 in 2001-2004, it can be programmed.

– Used to cycle and bleed the ABS brakes on my C6 ok

-Plugged it in to my 2011 Z06, and activated the Afterblow feature. I also cleared some old DTC codes that were in history. It works just fine and the quality feels genuine. It’s a pretty good knock off. Even came with all of the stickers from the Veltronix manufacturer. I assume they are knock off too.

About direct TPMS sensors
How to make sure the vehicle has direct TPMS sensors?

Direct TPMS sensors are DEFINITELY fitted in your vehicle when you

1)  Receive sensor information after activation via an Autel tool; or

2)  Find out tire pressure values on your onboard menu.

Direct TPMS sensors are PROBABLY fitted in your vehicle when you find out the factory tires equipped with either metal valve stems or rubber valve stems with rubber rings.

Or you can just disassemble your tires and have a visual check.

How to distinguish indirect TPMS from direct TPMS?

Direct TPMS employs direct tire pressure sensors on each wheel while indirect TPMS does not. ABS is a very common indirect TPMS.

What can I benefit from direct TPMS?

1)  Compared to indirect TPMS, direct TPMS provides more accurate pressure, temperature and battery status in a fast and live way.

About TPMS activation
What is activation? How to activate a TPMS sensor?

To activate a sensor is to make it transmitting data, so that the TPMS tool or the vehicle can get its information, such as tire pressure, temperature and/or battery status.

OEM sensors are usually activated by

1)  An Autel TPMS tool at low frequency; or

2)  Rapid air inflation/deflation such as 5 psi or 20 kPa/10 seconds; or

3)  Placing a magnet over the stem, especially those in 2003 and older vehicle models.

Notes: Autel sensors are activated at low frequency for the sake of convenience.

Does the selected menu function after activation?

Even though you can successfully activate sensors, it doesn’t mean your selected menu will function properly.

Different types of sensors from the same manufacturer can be activated but may not be used until they share an identical protocol. So you must make sure that the selected menu is based on the actual OEM part NO.

What if I get different modes for different sensors after successful activation?

Here are some different cases.

1)  If it’s an Autel sensor, it can work after successful activation no matter what mode it shows. Please just follow the how-to instructions for installation and relearn; or

2)  If it’s a Siemens OE sensor and your Autel tool reads a “Ship” mode, please contact Autel Technical Support and we may provide you a trial version/solution; or

3)  If it’s an OE sensor and your Autel tool reads a “Test”, “Park” or “Drive” mode, it’s a normal situation. It can work.

Why do I get “NA” parameters after I successfully activate sensors?

Sometimes you may get “NA” parameters after all sensors are successfully activated by your Autel tool, for example:

Temp (Temperature) shows “NA”, and/or

BAT (Battery) shows “NA”, and/or

Mode shows “NA”.

It’s a normal situation because the unavailable item is not supported on your selected menu. Just ignore and move on to your next step.

How to locate and solve TPMS troubles?

To locate and solve TPMS troubles, you need to complete the steps below:

1)  Use an Autel tool to scan trouble codes, activate sensors and read sensor information;

2)  Check your TPMS tool according to the detected trouble codes, and then repair/replace the damaged parts, like ECU, receiver, actuator, tire pressure sensor and circuit;

3)  Clear trouble codes;

4)  Relearn sensors after code clearance;

5)  Switch the ignition off and on again, start the engine, use the tool to scan the TPMS system again to make sure the codes are cleared and the TPMS light goes out;

6)  Drive your vehicle for 15 minutes to make sure everything goes fine.

How many types of TPMS relearns are there? And what are they?

There are three basic relearn methods for TPMS sensors.

Auto Relearn

Driving the vehicle is required to relearn new sensor IDs, but some simple TPMS resets should be done beforehand. Auto relearn procedure is more frequently used on Chrysler, Fiat, VW, Porsche, Bentley, Benz, BMW, Audi, Land Rover and Jaguar models.

OBD Relearn

An OBD relearn requires the use of a TPMS tool to write sensor IDs directly into the vehicle’s ECU. This procedure is frequently used on most Japanese- and Korean-made vehicles, and Chrysler, Fiat, Land Rover and Jaguar vehicles.

Stationary Relearn

New sensor IDs are relearned to the vehicle with the need of neither driving the vehicle nor writing IDs. This relearn procedure should be done in the vehicle’s parking mode. This procedure is more frequently used on GM, Ford, some Chinese- and Japanese-made vehicles like Nissan.

To access the stationary relearn mode, you need to:

1)  Use the Autel TPMS tool’s OBD II Scanner function to enable the Training or Relearn mode; and/or

2)  Operate necessary onboard keys based on the relearn procedure described in your Autel tool.

After that, you need to activate all tire pressure sensors to complete the stationary relearn. Generally, the activation sequence is clockwise, starting from front left wheel and ending with rear left wheel.

How to relearn TPMS sensors?

There are some cases for you to relearn TPMS sensors:

1)  If it’s an OEM sensor, please see Relearn Procedure in Autel tools.

2)  If it’s an Autel sensor, please program it first, then follow the instructions in Relearn Procedure.

3)  If you don’t want to perform the relearn procedure by yourself, you can simply select either “Copy by Activation” or “Copy by OBD” to complete it.

Copy by Activation: you need to activate all tire pressure sensors first, select “Copy by Activation”, and then select the desired wheel to program the sensor. In this way, the sensor ID read by activation is successfully written into an Autel sensor.

Copy by OBD: you need to read sensor IDs through OBD port first, select “Copy by OBD”, and then select the desired wheel to program the sensor. In this way, the sensor ID read through OBD port is successfully written into an Autel sensor.

About error sensors
What if I get an “error: multi sensors” message when programming a sensor?

If the “error: multi sensors” message shows when you are programming a sensor, it means there are some other sensors quite close to the one that you are programming. Please take your sensor to an open air for the programming in order to avoid interference.

If you intend to program several sensors at the same time. Please remember to select “Setting -> Wheels -> One wheel” first, then go back to the programming interface to program all sensor IDs at one time. If you want to relearn sensors, please switch to All Wheels mode by selecting “Setting -> Wheels -> All wheels” at first, then relearn them one by one.
