Piwis Tester II Control unit list Control unit overview

This section of Piwis Tester II describes how you can display the control units installed in the vehicle in a control unit overview by means of a control unit search.

The basis for this is an existing ODX project in which the control unit-specific data is stored. The system must check whether a control unit of the project is installed in the vehicle and what variant this is.

After a user action, the diagnostic application first performs a control unit search. The list of all or selected control units and their status is then shown in the control unit overview.

Process with vehicle communication

1. After the application has been started successfully, the list of control units for the respective ODX project is displayed in a control unit list.

There are two possibilities for selection of control units:

2. Select the desired control units by marking them. If you would like to deselect a selected control unit again, click again in the corresponding line.

3. The complete selection can be cancelled again by pressing the <F6> button.

Note on display:
Control units for which no variant is detected are identified by a  icon in the Status column. The data of the basic variant is displayed for control units that are labelled in this way. Control units that have a fault memory entry are identified by a ! icon in the DTC column.

If a higher-order control unit has subcomponents and you select a higher-order control unit and then change to a different function group or function, all subcomponents are implicitly selected as well. However, if you mark a subcomponent or several subcomponents and then change to another function group or function, any further action will be performed only for this selection.

Example:
You select the control unit Gateway and change to another function group. In addition to the main control unit Gateway, the following subcomponents are then also displayed in this function group:

Process without vehicle communication (special procedure for View mode)

If diagnosis if performed in View mode, there is no communication with the vehicle via a VCI.
The variant detection process that normally takes place as part of the control unit search is
omitted as there is no vehicle communication.
In order to nevertheless access the data on the respective control unit variant, you must
select the variant in the control unit list. Proceed as follows:

1. Click in the Control unit (A) column for the respective control unit and select a control unit variant for each control unit via a drop-down menu (B). If you would like to have the basic variant displayed for the respective control unit, select the first/top entry in the drop-down menu. The complete selection can be cancelled again by pressing the <F6> button.

GM Tech2 Scan Tool pass-through vs go-between

For program a module with GM Tech2 scan tools,there are two methods. One is pass-through and the other is using the Tech 2 as a go-between.

How to do?Here we go:

1.The pass-through is to use with a laptop in the vehicle and it just uses the Tech 2 as the connection between. This is the fastest and easiest way to do it.
That is, the data are directly downloaded from the PC to the ECU in the vehicle.
Although the GM Tech 2 is still necessary in the mode, the data entry and the download control is done directly at the pc. Altogether, the method is faster, and it is recommended when a pc with TIS2000 software is within 3m of a vehicle.

1.  Connect Tech 2 to the vehicle.
2.  Connect Tech 2 to the PC switch on Tech 2.
3.  Start TIS 2000 on the PC.
4.  Select the icon ‘Service Programming System’ (Fig. 1) on the TIS2000 start page.
5.  Start TIS 2000 on the PC.
6.  On the screen ‘Select Diagnostic Tool and Programming Process’ (See picture below) make a selection for

***Pass-Thru mode
***the reprogramming of an ECU that was not exchanged or the replacement/programming of a new ECU
***the ECU location.
Then clock ‘Next’ button.

2.The go-between method is for when you can’t bring the computer into the vehicle and uses the gm Tech2 scanner as a go-between. You connect the Professional Diagnostic Tool Tech 2 to the vehicle and download the module information that you want to program. Then you disconnect, run to the computer running Tis2000, connect it to the computer and download the programming information for that module, disconnect again and run back to the vehicle, connect it and it automatically programs the module. It can take a long time depending on the module (PCM is the longest).

My overall impression after playing with the Tech 2 scan tool for a few days- This thing is cheap, works great, and is of the same build quality as my original. Some of the few differences that I immediately noticed are the buttons feel different and the screen is much brighter. The buttons on my original have a distinct “click” feel to them, and the clones are mushy. However I found that the more that I press them, the clickier they get. The screen being brighter is a plus.

I just did a “Fast-Learn” on a G8’s 6L80E last week with mine. A Snap-On MODUS was not able to do this. There are simply factory diagnostic procedures that a Tech 2 can do on GM vehicles that no other tool can. But yes, to reflash PCM’s, TCM’s, etc, you need to have authorization from the Tech Center, which means you have to be a dealership or a paying subscriber to the service which is a serious chunk of $$$$.

I reflashed my ecm. only have to buy the 55 dollar three day access. the Car Diagnostic Tool tis2000 software to flash, and the dongle key to unlock the functions to flash is and extra 25 dollars, and that was why my tech 2 cost me 325. cause i bought the software and dongle with it.

With that said, Bosch (who now owns the rights to GM Tech 2’s as they purchased out Vetronix), will not support the unit because it’s a factory knock-off. So should you have to replace the VCI module (I’ve had to replace mine due to wear and tear on the connection where it damaged the motherboard inside), or any other necessary repair.

Also, Obd2 tool Tech 2’s can only be updated through 2009 MY vehicle info, was my understanding from GM. For 2009+ GM has gone to a new setup called MDI. MDI is backwards compatible with pre-2009 GM vehicles (it even has the software on the screen to emulate the screens you’d see on the T2).

How to code Porsche 997.1 steering wheel to 997.2’s

997.1 upgrade to 997.2 steering wheel control module (997.613.289.01 or 997.613.299.01) need coding with Porsche Piwis ii following this step:

1. Select “special functions” and do a “vehicle handover”.

2. The “vehicle handover” runs automatically. When prompted if the car is new, select “no” and then confirm your chassis number (VIN). The “vehicle handover” is needed for recognizing your new steering wheel unit, so that all other control modules are able to communicate with it.

3. Select to “steering col. switch” unit and read and erase all fault memories. Then switch to “codings” and set “Automatic (Tiptronic/PDK)” and “PDK” (both!) to “installed”. Also set all your other values to “installed” if the car is equipped with them (for example speed control system).

4. Then select “PSM” unit and read and erase all fault memories. After that read your security code (The security code is read with the OBD2 Scanner PIWIS2
under menu item “Actual values”) and do a steering-wheel-sensor-calibration (security code is needed here). (some cars need this calibration clear PSM faults)

5. At last: Erase all fault memories and then have fun while driving a Tiptronic car with PDK-Paddles
