How to use the Tech 2 Scan Tool to perform GM SPS Programming in what is known as Pass-Thru or Legacy Pass Thru mode for calibration updates. This can be for the ECU or any programmable module in the vehicle, such as the EBCM, TCM, or Radio that you may want to reflash.

I’m going to show you a little bit newer technology. So we’re still with the tech two and at this point I’ve pre-connected some things up here I’ve got connected to the diagnostic interface this the unit accessory for the tech two called a candy module a controller area network diagnostic interface. So this connects to the vehicle and then it connects to the tech 2 and then in the tech 2.

If we were to go into our SPS system what I’m gonna try to show you here. This particular vehicle work we’re working on right now is a 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt.

If we go to request. What we’re gonna find out really quick is after we say Chevrolet well. We don’t have anything newer than 2007 that we can select. Because this 2000 which is what the remote mode is set up for.

So how can we update the firmware on the modules for this 2009 well we’re gonna have to go to this to web on the internet. So I’ve got this cable already connected to a laptop over here and we’re going to go ahead and show you how to stew web works which replaced this 2000. So I’m gonna set this guy right next to this laptop sitting on the passenger seat here.

Warning: Pay very close attention to the instructions around power cabling and battery readiness as a power fluctuation during an SPS programming procedure can permanently damage a controller module.

This applies to the genuine Vetronix, HP or Bosch built Tech2 as well as high quality Chinese clones equally and for all makes under General Motors such as Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, Cadillac, Oldsmobile, Pontiac, Hummer, Saturn, Opel, Vauxhall, and Saab.. The programming is illustrated using a 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt LS and the www.acdelcotds.com subscription service features using a Techline PC using Tech2 legacy passthru mode to update the Radio.

Applicable to model year 2008 thru 2013, which is when the Tech2 ended and was fully replaced by the GM Multiple Diagnostic Interface tool, or GM MDI and MDI 2 and TIS 2 Web subscriptions. This method is available with TIS2000 for GM vehicles older than 2008 as well.

 

I recommend that you buy gm tech2 on Obd2 tool website. They are cheap, logistics is fast, and after-sales service is also very good. I have been using it for a year and there is no problem with the quality of the product.

Anyone know GM TECH2 and MID diagnostic tools

What is the difference between the TECH 2 hand held tool and the newer MID interface you use with a laptop? From what I read, the MID will replace the TECH2 but currently it doesn’t diagnose, just program. I need to diagnose a few issues on a 2007 Silverado, 2012 Cruze and 2013 Cruze flood car. The clones are under $400 so it might be time to get one.

The Cheap $224.00 to $400.00 Tech 2s, made in China and don’t even bother having updates installed.They will crash when when updates are installed.Overall the clone Tech 2s are good for what you are doing and are good as the real version now made by Bosch.The real version was made by Vetronix,Bosch bought out Vetronix in 2003.Also make sure it has the Candi box with it,a must for these CAN vehicles.

The last update for the tech 2 has already come out so, I would think about buying a new one unless you work on a lot of GM products.

Depending on the vehicle you’re working on, the GM MDI (Multiple Diagnostic Interface) will do everything a Tech 2 will do but, you’ll need a laptop and GDS software. Going forward from the 2013 model year, the MDI with a laptop will be the GM Diagnostic tool.

Should I buy GM MDI instead of Tech 2 clone

The Tech2 clone is definitely fine, but I think people looking for a good tool now should really look at an MDI clone instead.

The Future of the Tech 2

The Tech 2 remains an essential tool through at least the 2010 model year. The GM MDI will not support past models when its diagnostic capabilities are introduced. And, the Tech2 will continue to be needed to diagnose all vehicles fromprevious model years. Remote programming with the Tech 2 will continue to be supported for use on all 2007 and previous vehicles.Additional information will be supplied in future.

HOW WILL THE G-M MDI BE USED?

The new G-M MDI can be used only in the Pass-Thru method. This means you can use it as your programming tool, while your Tech 2/CANdi remains available for diagnostics and other duties.

I have issues with it, however:

The GM MDI will not support past models when its diagnostic capabilities are introduced.
I’m not sure what this means. The GM MDI WILL clearly support past model years with the Tech2win applications. So I’m not sure what this statement actually means. The only thing I can think of is that GM will remove pass thru support at a later date, but since its all been cracked already, this shouldn’t matter.

The new G-M MDI can be used only in the Pass-Thru method. This means you can use it as your programming tool, while your Tech 2/CANdi remains available for diagnostics and other duties.
This statement implies that the pass thru method is a bad thing. Considering the Tech2win application works perfectly with EVERY function on all GM vehicles as far back as 1996, I don’t understand what this is really saying. It implies that you can’t do diagnostic troubleshooting using pass-thru, when in fact you can.

As far as I can tell from my testing, this is a basic sales pitch in order to encourage people to keep the Tech2 as well as purchase a MDI2 unit – both of which are incredibly expensive if purchased legitimately through GM.

In reality, you don’t need a  Obd2 scan tool Tech2 and a MDI2. An MDI interface is more than enough especially on our older cars like the C5 corvette which GM will unlikely ever release further PCM upgrades for given the fact they were discontinued over 10 years ago.

Cloned GM MDI possible work with Ford IDS software

Is clone GM MDI interface possible to work with Ford IDS without limitations?
Also is there anyway to convert MDI to a VCM II by flashing it? They seem to be very similar. But how to?

Reply 1: As i know, GM MDI and Ford IDS are two different scanners.
The GM MDI can’t work with Ford IDS

Reply 2: Possible but not easy…Requires editing of the Dynamic link library files and more.

i have had MDI Working with it for a long time for personal use
Since version 97.xxx it is easier than say 96.01 because when they changed things to block clones in this version, they basically changed the file structure to that of an MDI.

Reply 3: My dilemma is deciding to get rid of my MDI clone that I purchased 1 year ago (I sold my GM car and bought a Ford so I don’t need it anymore) or try to use the gm mdi software on a Ford vehicle. I don’t have the money to purchase a genuine VCM II and I don’t want to buy a clone either.
I just want to update a few things on my Ford since the warranty is over.
I need to update the GPS module and activate the digital speedo. Looks like I’ll just leave it alone before I screw things up.

Reply 4: I have the same mdi and try flash the sd card put it in recovery mode with ford manager and don’t work when I try back to gm the tool never responding again the hardware damage and leds turn on red beeping so I think you sell that mdi and then buy a vxdiag vcx nano for ford I have one and working

Reply 5: There must be a way to flash the FPGA to a VCM. Once that’s done you can probably recovery the SD card.
The SD cards can also be copied using a tool called USB Image Tool so I’m sure you can recover your MDI.
I just don’t want to bother with it because I don’t know if it will work.
I might sell it and buy another clone. I haven’t decided yet. The MDI clone looks so much better than the VCM clone.

Reply 6: GM MDI and Ford VCM II are made by Bosch ETAS as well as Alliance VI+ or as many OEM tools now
But this one are a little bit different architecture.
So as we discussed many times and Nr. Vag Vag already confirmed in the forum you can use VCM II with Tech2Win and GDS2 but not fully
You can use VCM II with Nissan Consult III Plus but also hot full
Well I didn’t checked GM MDI with Ford IDS but I’m very sure tgat you are waisting your time for the moment.
When IDS will cover J2534 tool then you maybe will be happy to us the GM MDI with IDS but for the moment forget about
I changed the SD card in VCM II clone because this one was defective ( so a fresh untouched sd card – just formated ) and I only put it in Recovery Mode and I fix it. But I’m not sure that you can do it the same with a GM MDI.

Gm Mdi it is a J2534 tool that’s why is working
Ids is different.
